Testing the Revlon One Step Dryer and Volumizer

Image
I recorded this video last year. Initially, I was just going to scrap it. However, given these current pandemic times and our need for social distancing, I decided to edit and post it. I recorded my first impression and subsequent review of how the Revlon One Step Dryer and Volumizer worked on my curly natural hair. When I first saw this little dryer, I thought, "If this thing works, this could really save me some time".  I quickly searched the internet to watch people test it out.  But, I didn't see many results for people with my texture hair.  And, I was curious to find out if it could blow dry my hair from a wet state and give me a wearable blowout. I decided to purchase it myself and see if this thing worked.  Even if it didn't work to give me a style I could walk out of the door with, it would at least make drying my hair more comfortable.  I used to use a blow dryer with a comb attachment to dry my hair, then I would flat iron my hair in small secti...

Three Strand Twist Out

Image
I discovered this style years ago when I saw the final results.  I've never been good at twistouts, but I have always liked them.  It took a while for me to grasp the concept of the three strand twist because naturally your brain wants to braid when you divide your hair into the three sections.  It's a funny thing how your brain works.  I have found that it takes concentration to make these three strand twists happen, but it's not hard. Here are two angles of how the style looks.  Don't mind my eucalyptus in the background.  I didn't realize it made it hard to see the style.  Now, I will say, one of the problems I always have with twistouts, is that my hair tends to unwind at the ends, no matter how tight I twist it.  Because of this, I actually roll my ends around a metal clip and close the clip to keep the twists in overnight.  Also, I take bobby pins and twist my hair tighter at the roots and secure it with pins to keep it from untwis...

Wash and Go Routine 2015

Image
This is my quick and easy go-to hair style.  Lately, I have been using the As I Am Coconut Co-Wash to wash my hair with only conditioner (co-wash) when doing a Wash and Go.  Shampoo can dry out curly hair, for this reason, I don't always use it.  When I use both shampoo and conditioner, I tend to use the As I Am Curl Clarity Shampoo. I co-wash carefully rubbing my scalp to lift any dirt or product residue off of it.  I usually do this in the shower. When I get out of the shower, I dry my hair with a towel, gently.  I have heard it is best to use an old t-shirt because the towel can create frizz and dry your hair out too much.  I do believe this is true, but most days, I just grab whatever is nearest, usually it's a towel. Don't over dry the hair.  You just want to keep it from dripping wet, because once it is styled, it won't be completely dry.  The point of a "Wash and Go" is that you wash your hair and go on about your day, hence th...

Flat Ironing My Hair

Image
As  mentioned before in the post about my natural hair, I flat iron my hair a couple times a month.  I try to make it to the salon and have it professionally done at least once a month, so I only have to go through this extremely time consuming routine about once a month.  I like the results, I just don't necessarily love the amount of time it takes to get these results. I use some of the same products at home my hairstylist uses in the salon.  I brush through my hair with the Denman brush before I wash it to relieve my hair of any knots that may have formed amongst my curls.  I also use it after I flat iron my hair.  I love the way that brush feels on my scalp. The leave-in conditioner I use is the It's a 10 Silk Express Miracle Conditioner.  And, I use the Lanza Healing Strength oil to protect my strands from the heat.  The long tailed comb with the medium width teeth will come into play later when I am actually running the flat i...

Hair Journey

Image
In my last post, I talked about my decision to transition my hair into it's natural state.  Here are some pictures of how my hair looked throughout the transitioning process.  I will warn you, some of these photos are not the best quality.  I am trying to do a better job documenting this hair journey. When I flat iron my hair, I wear that straight style for about four days to a week.  If it starts to revert to its curly state in less than a week's time, I simply wash it and just go back to wearing it curly.  I flat iron my hair at least twice a month.  I know, some naturals may be out there gasping.  Flat ironing is sometimes considered a big natural hair faux pas.  So far, I have not had any issues with heat damage. February 2012 May 2012 May 2012 - Flat ironed April 2013 (a month after my son was born) September 2013 - Flat ironed March 2014 - Flat ironed August 2014 April 2015 April 2015 - Flat ironed...

Why I Decided To Go Natural

Image
In December of 2011, I decided to stop using chemical straighteners on my hair and allow it to grow out in its natural state.  This means it has been three years since I put a relaxer in my hair.  Before deciding to go natural, I was relaxing my hair every four to five weeks.  I always had thick hair and when I would sweat, especially when working out, it usually began in my hair and my hair would revert back to it's curly state.  It seemed to get to the point where my hair was resisting the relaxers.  I wondered why I was even going through the trouble of relaxing my hair. Picture right after my last relaxer After years of relaxers, I started seriously thinking about going natural.  My hair had been relaxed since I was three years old, so I needed to first figure out how I was going to pull this out.  I knew very little about natural hair styling.  To educate myself, I started checking out YouTube vloggers.  One in particular, Mahogany...
